FORT WAYNE — The Allen County Fairgrounds hosted the 2010 Musical Instruments of Yesteryear Wednesday afternoon.
The show provided musical entertainment fashioned after what was around during the days of the settlers.
The instruments included a chord zither, a tremola, an ukelin, a potato bug mandolin, a ukulele, a lap and cardboard dulcimer, a tenor banjo, a whistle and lumber jacks.
Not every instrument was played during the performance due to two of the players being unable to make the show, but what was played sparked the audience’s interest.
With the group is Jane Dawkins, a singer and whistle player for 10 years.
“I like the fact that it’s very intuitive,” Dawkins said, “They made these to be inexpensive and easy to carry and play.”
This was the original intent of all of the instruments that were on display while the group played and sung away. Some songs were recognizable such as "Yankee Doodle," and the crowd participated in singing along. Other songs were less recognized, but their Dawkins explained their originality.
Lea Woodrum, one of the event’s organizers, explained the importance and history of each instrument.
“They were made so anyone could play them,” Woodrum said with a big smile on her face.
