Grabill resident Robert Reynolds worked in the carpet cleaning industry for 18 years before opening Xcellent Care, a carpet cleaning service, last July.
Reynolds offers residential and commercial steam cleaning of carpets, Oriental and area rugs, draperies, upholstery, mattresses, RVs and boats, along with fabric and carpet protection and stain and odor removal. He also offers 24-hour emergency service for water damage.
“My carpet cleaning is a five-step process,” Reynolds said. “I guarantee the carpet won’t be wet for more than seven hours.”
An important part of the drying processe includes vacuuming and raking the carpet after it is cleaned. Raking the fibers assists in the evaporative process, Reynolds said, and also helps bond the Scotchgard fabric protector and the deodorizers to the carpet fibers. He advises customers to stay off their carpets after cleaning until they are completely dry. Walking on wet carpet can crush the fibers and track in dirt. There is also a risk of falling when moving from wet carpet to a slick floor surface.
Most carpeting should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, Reynolds said. More frequent cleaning is recommended for households with pets or young children.
Reynolds offered several tips to keep carpet looking nice after it is professionally cleaned and protected.
“Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum,” he said. “Soil is what makes your carpet look ugly.”
He also recommends prompt cleaning of spills when they happen by blotting with a white towel and working from the edges of the spill to the middle.
“Don’t be too aggressive, though, or it will leave a fuzzy spot,” he said.
Placing floor mats at doorways and keeping sidewalks and garages swept will reduce the amount of dirt that is tracked onto the carpet, Reynolds said, adding that house slippers, rather than socks or bare feet, will also help.
