Overwhelmed moms and dads everywhere understand how stressful parenting can be. If you add a sick child, job layoff, death in the family or some other highly emotional situation, parenting stress can often put families into crisis mode.
That’s why SCAN offers Daybreak Crisis Homes. This program provides emergency, short-term care for children whose parents are in crisis. It’s a free, voluntary service designed to give parents a chance to respond to emergencies in their life without having to worry about who will help them care for their children. Daybreak Crisis Homes are licensed, specially-trained families who provide their homes and care to children who have no other place to go.
Some of the most common situations facing families who have used Daybreak Crisis Homes include:
-Children need short-term housing while their parent is hospitalized or recovering from medical procedures
-A family member is experiencing a mental health crisis and the children need short-term care to remain safe
-Children are in an unsafe situation due to domestic violence or other potentially abusive environment and they need short-term care to remain safe while a parent receives help
-A new mother is experiencing post-partum depression and needs someone to care for her children while she receives help and support
-A parent becomes incarcerated and the children need short-term housing while the parent is incapacitated.
Daybreak Crisis Homes provide anywhere from 4 hours to 7 days of emergency care at no charge to the family. Newborns and children up to 10 years of age are eligible. Siblings older than 10, and other children outside these age limits, may be accepted on a case by case basis.
